The World Heritage site of Dambula is famous for its ancient caves dating back to the first century BC, later converted to one of the largest and most important monastery complexes in Sri Lanka. There are five caves containing sculptures and painted images under a huge overhanging rock carved with drip ledges to keep the interior dry during the rainy season. In 1190 the caves were gilded and added to, when it became a major religious centre. The caves were painted and restored during the 18th century, under the patronage of the Kandyan kings; and in 1938 the architecture of the temple was embellished with arched colonnades and gabled entrances.
